Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone Aquatics is set to host the 2nd Edition of the National Open Water Swimming Championships on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the National Tourist Board View, Lumley Beach.

The event, themed “Physical, Mental & Ocean Health Awareness,” aims to promote athletic endurance, physical wellbeing, and environmental sustainability.

The championships will feature swimmers competing in 1KM, 3KM, and 5KM open water races, showcasing athletic endurance while promoting a deeper commitment to physical wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

According to the President of Sierra Leone Aquatics, “We are using swimming as a platform to highlight the importance of physical fitness, mental health, and ocean preservation. This is more than a competition – it’s a call to protect our bodies and our beaches.”

The event will also include beach clean-up campaigns, mental health awareness sessions, and interactive fitness activities to engage the wider public. Sierra Leone Aquatics hopes to draw a diverse and enthusiastic audience in collaboration with local communities, youth organizations, and key stakeholders.

The President emphasized that the event aims to increase awareness of how aquatic sports can inspire a healthier, more environmentally conscious society.

The event aligns with global efforts to combat climate change, reduce pollution, and protect marine life. Prizes will be awarded to top-performing swimmers, but the focus remains on promoting wellness and environmental awareness through sport.

As Sierra Leone continues to advance sports for development, the National Open Water Swimming Championships is poised as a powerful symbol of how athleticism, advocacy, and action can work together for a stronger body, sharper mind, and cleaner ocean.
