Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has announced significant gains under the Feed Salone project, claiming that the country has achieved 50-70% food self-sufficiency.
Dr. Sengeh made the announcement at the 2nd Annual National Presidential Town Hall in Kenema on June 17, 2025, representing President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.
According to Dr. Sengeh, local rice production has increased, reducing importation and contributing to exchange rate stability.
He also noted that local onion production has risen, leading to a 30% drop in prices. Additionally, vegetable oil is now being locally produced and exported.
The Chief Minister highlighted several initiatives aimed at improving agriculture in Sierra Leone. He mentioned that 4,000 hectares of farmland in Tormabum and Kambia are currently under irrigation development. A $10 million credit facility provided by the Bank of Sierra Leone is also improving access to financing for farmers.
Dr. Sengeh further noted that the government has constructed over 400 kilometers of roads in farming communities and replaced ferry crossings with four new bridges, with another four under construction. Those initiatives aim to improve market access and support farmers in the country.
