Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone has received a donation of 1,030 metric tons of rice from the People’s Republic of China as a continuous support to the country’s educational initiatives.
Sierra Leone Government has consecutively received donations from China twice, with the first donation totaling 7,000 bags of rice. This year’s donations is mainly intended to boost the government’s school feeding program, which plays a crucial role in improving student attendance and retention.
A key portion of the rice, which marks the second donation, specifically 20,600 bags, has been allocated to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE). The remaining 7,000 bags are designated for the Ministry of Fisheries.
On July 2, Mr. Brima M. Sowa, the Permanent Secretary of MBSSE, led a delegation to the World Food Programme (WFP) storage facility in eastern Freetown to assess the condition and availability of the rice.
Mr. Sowa stated that the generous contribution from the Chinese Government is essential for enhancing the Free Quality School Education Program, championed by His Excellency Rtd Brigadier Julius Maada Bio.
He emphasized that providing students with adequate nutrition is vital for improving both attendance rates and overall student performance.
Mr. Augustine Koroma, the National Coordinator of the Free Quality School Education Program, stressed the importance of quality assurance for the donated rice. He announced that the Sierra Leone Standard Bureau will conduct laboratory tests to ensure the rice meets all safety and quality standards.
He went forward to commend that the donated rice will serve as a vital resource for the upcoming academic year, further promoting the government’s commitment to educational advancement
