Popular Sierra Leonean female activist and media commentator, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, has announced her intention to travel next week on Air Sierra Leone’s Freetown-to-London Gatwick route, a move she describes as a “patriotic decision” aimed at boosting public confidence in the national carrier.
Dr. Blyden, who was among the first public figures to raise concerns over the technical status of the airline’s aircraft servicing the Freetown-to-Nigeria route, clarified via a social media post that her earlier warnings were not intended to undermine the airline but were made in the national interest.
“My alarms are never malicious but out of patriotism,” she wrote. “So also is my patriotic decision to use the flight to the UK.”
She noted that her choice to fly Air Sierra Leone is intended to encourage other Sierra Leoneans to trust and use the national carrier. “I know this my decision will boost the confidence of my compatriots that they can also board the flight to the UK. I have checked their UK partnerships and services. I am personally confident to fly with Air Sierra Leone to London Gatwick,” she added.
She also added that she will provide a public report on her travel experience once she returns to Freetown:
