Brima Directs Suspension of SLFA Elections

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Thomas Daddy Brima has instructed the Acting Secretary General, Mohamed Benson Bawoh to put a hold on electoral processes following what he termed as “gross violations” of the SLFA Statutes and Electoral Code.

In a letter dated 19th July 2025 and addressed to the Acting Secretary General of the SLFA, Brima raised grave concerns over what has been described as “gross violations” of the SLFA Statutes and Electoral Code. The violations, according to the letter from the Office of the SLFA President, are undermining the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.

Acting in accordance with Article 37 (1)(d) of the SLFA Statues, Brima instructed the Acting Secretary General “to put the entire electoral process on hold and for FIFA Governance to investigate” the said violations.

At the centre of the controversy is the failure to conduct mandatory integrity checks, a requirement under Article 60(3) of the SLFA Statutes (2019), which must be fulfilled before any elections can take place. The absence of these checks has been deemed a clear breach of SLFA rules.

Also cited is the improper appointment of the Electoral Committee and other independent bodies, particularly the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson, who were not elected by the SLFA Congress as required by Article 60(5) of the statutes.

Brima also claimed that the Committee failed to comply with the mandatory electoral deadlines in tandem with Article 6(d) of the FA’s 2012 Electoral Code. In this, the President said the Committee failed to publish the list of qualified candidates on July 8th as agreed in the approved electoral roadmap with no formal reason provided.

The President said the Committee also failed to issue a ruling before banning him and Aminata Bangura on July 18th. “This is a direct violation of Article 68 of the SLFA Ethics Code,” Brima said.

Some members of the public were shocked when the SLFA Ethics Committee released a statement banning Brima and Bangura from contesting in the August 2nd Presidential Election in Lungi.

Analysts said the situation and Brima’s letter have raised serious doubts about the legality and transparency of the electoral process, fueling speculation that the upcoming SLFA elections may be suspended or nullified unless corrective action is taken.

Meanwhile, the President’s Office has called for immediate attention to the matter to restore trust in the system and ensure the electoral process is conducted in line with established legal and ethical standards.
