Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Civil rights activist Thomas Moore Conteh, Esq., warns that internal conflicts within Sierra Leone’s ruling SLPP threaten to undermine the country’s progress and development efforts.
In his statement, Conteh said the government’s much-publicized progress in reducing the price of rice is merely damage control. He stressed that Sierra Leone is a rich country with all the resources needed to improve the lives of its citizens.
According to Conteh, the nation has the capacity to make rice available at Le300 or even Le150, a price range he believes would prevent Sierra Leoneans from leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad.
The government recently announced a reduction in wholesale rice prices, dropping from NLe799 per 50kg bag in February 2025 to NLe665 by June 2025. However, retail prices for most brands in Freetown still range between Le610 and Le640 per 50kg, raising concerns about whether the reductions are making any real impact on ordinary Sierra Leoneans.
