Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has donated learning materials to more than 250 pupils of the R.C. Primary and Junior Secondary School in Kagbankona Village, Biriwa Chiefdom, Bombali District.
The donation, made on Sunday 7th September 2025, included school bags, exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, and chalk. While the Mayor was attending a funeral in Kakorla Village, members of her team delivered the items in the presence of the village chief, head teachers, parents, and pupils.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr highlighted her longstanding connection to the community, recalling how over 20 years ago, she co-founded the Sierra Leone War Trust for Children (SLWT) with six other Sierra Leoneans in London. Together, they built the R.C. School to support families returning after the war from the Ross Road camp for internally displaced persons. SLWT’s work extended further with initiatives such as teacher training, a health centre, water wells, agricultural training, and an oil palm plantation to empower the community.
Chief Michael Conteh, speaking at the event, expressed gratitude and recalled when the Mayor first came to build the school, proudly noting that he was among the first pupils enrolled.
