Police Dismiss Rumors of Youths Trapped in Kono Tunnel

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone Police have dismissed reports claiming that about 100 youths were trapped in an abandoned mining tunnel at Kumao Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District.

Police officers visited the mine site on October 21, 2025, following widespread rumors of the alleged incident. Upon investigation, they found no evidence of anyone trapped in the old tunnel.

According to police sources, engagements were held with representatives of the Gold Lion Mining Company and local authorities, who confirmed that no one was reported missing in the area. The situation in Kumao Town was described as calm and peaceful.

The police further advised the company to strengthen its safety protocols and establish a standby rescue team to respond promptly to any future emergencies.

In addition, the company’s Human Resources and Public Relations officers, along with community leaders, were urged to formally report to the police if safety regulations are not adequately followed.

Police said they will continue to monitor the site and surrounding areas for any developments. The investigation concluded that the initial reports were unfounded, and normalcy has been maintained in the community.
