Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Residents of Port Loko City have expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of petty theft in various parts of the municipality, urging the Sierra Leone Police to intensify patrols and enhance community security efforts.
Incidents of theft involving household items, construction materials, and other valuables have become more frequent in recent weeks, leaving many residents anxious.
Abubakarr Sesay, a resident of Lunsar Road and leader of the youth social club (Team Youngsters), said that young people in the community have taken it upon themselves to provide night security due to the growing rate of theft.
“We the youth are now serving as community security because stealing has become too common,” Sesay said. “We spend a large portion of our nights watching over our environment. We are calling on the police to increase patrols and ensure that our communities remain safe and free from crime.”
Similarly, Idrissa Koroma, a resident of the EducAid Rural area along the Kambia Highway, described the situation as alarming. He said that his area, being a new settlement with few houses, has become a target for thieves due to limited police patrols.
“Petty theft is too much here. They steal blocks, sand, and other items,” Koroma explained. “When suspects are handed over to the police, they are often seen back in the community shortly after.
Koroma also mentioned that domestic violence and bullying are gradually becoming additional security concerns in the area. He therefore called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with the police to ensure peace and safety in their communities.
Residents continue to appeal to the relevant authorities for increased police presence and stronger law enforcement actions, stressing that effective collaboration between the police and community members is vital in addressing the growing wave of petty theft in Port Loko City.
