Attorney General Urges Leaders to Avoid Rhetoric

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has urged all political party leaders to refrain from using language that incites violence ahead of the 2028 elections.

He reminded political leaders of the 11-year civil war that claimed thousands of lives and destroyed countless properties across the country, noting that the traumatic experiences from that period still linger in the minds of many Sierra Leoneans.

The Minister further emphasized that war should never be an option, not during elections, nor after. He also noted that no one should be talking about going to war.

“We concluded weeklong consultations with various stakeholders, political parties, electoral management bodies, and civil society groups on the various constitutional and legislative proposals for electoral systems reform.” he stated.

The proposed reforms stem from the Justice Edmond Cowan Constitutional Review Committee (2013-2017) and the Tripartite Committee Reports.

He concluded by stating that, “It was great to discuss the details of the proposals and to obtain useful feedback from political party reps, EMBs and civil society partners on how we can all work together to strengthen Sierra Leone’s electoral systems. We will continue to ensure that this process is inclusive and broadly participatory. “
