Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) and NWRMA have conducted joint monitoring of water packaging companies in Bo, Southern Sierra Leone.

The monitoring is geared towards ensuring that the companies understand the risks associated with selling untreated or inadequately treated water to the public.

SALWACO said that this will ensure the companies are aware of the importance of compliance with safety standards in preventing waterborne diseases.

In other news, SALWACO embarked on the maintenance of a pump crucial for the water supply in Makeni. The company said some locals in the municipality went days without pipeborne water due to the ineffective pump.

With maintenance works continuing in other parts of the country, SALWACO urged customers to pay their bills on time for the company to effectively continue its works not only in Freetown but other parts of the country.

Pipe-borne water is a luxury for some Sierra Leoneans, especially those living in the provinces. The capital, Freetown suffers from an inadequate water supply with some communities accessing pipe-borne water only thrice a week.

Experts have urged the government to increase the number of reservoirs in the Western Area as a short-term solution, as well as, constructing a new dam to replace or add to the ageing Guma Dam located in the Freetown Peninsula.
