Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE, on Thursday, 20 November 2025, welcomed Prof. Kimberlyn Leary and Dr. Griffin Jones, researchers from the Good Services Lab at the Bloomberg Center for Cities, Harvard University.
The researchers are visiting Freetown as part of a project examining the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund. The study aims to deepen understanding of how Freetown is empowering young people to develop and implement impactful local climate solutions.
During their visit, the Harvard team will meet with youth groups, interact with emerging climate leaders, and tour youth-led climate initiatives across the city. According to the Freetown City Council, these engagements will provide firsthand insight into the innovation, resilience, and community impact being demonstrated by the city’s young climate actors.
“I am delighted to welcome Prof. Kimberlyn Leary and Dr. Griffin Jones to Freetown,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr said. “Their visit will help us showcase how young people in Sierra Leone are driving meaningful climate action in their communities.”
She added that the research project will also provide an opportunity to highlight Freetown’s efforts in supporting youth-led climate initiatives and fostering innovative solutions to local environmental challenges.
