Health Ministry and WHO Launch Five-Year Health Plan

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), civil society organizations, development partners, and other key stakeholders, has commenced a crucial strategic planning process to shape Sierra Leone’s health sector over the next five years.

The multi-stakeholder workshop comes on the heels of the End-Term Review of the National Health Sector Strategic Plan (NHSSP) 2021–2025. The review assessed the country’s progress, challenges, and lessons learned, while laying the foundation for a renewed commitment to coordinated planning under the national principle of “One Plan, One Budget, One Report.”

During the workshop, participants are working together to define and align priority areas that will drive health sector reforms and investments from 2026 onward. The new strategy is expected to accelerate Sierra Leone’s progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC), enhance health security, and promote equitable, people-centred health services across the country.

A key focus of the upcoming plan includes strengthening primary healthcare systems, improving service delivery at all levels, and bolstering emergency preparedness and response mechanisms—especially in a context where global health threats continue to evolve.

WHO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government throughout this process. The organization continues to provide technical guidance and coordination support to ensure Sierra Leone builds a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable health system capable of meeting the needs of every citizen.

As the strategic planning process advances, stakeholders expressed optimism that the new health sector strategy will position Sierra Leone on a stronger path toward improved health outcomes and long-term national development.
