Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) has commenced the expansion of its detention facilities at its headquarters in Hastings, a move that underscores the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to strengthening security infrastructure across the country.

The expansion project forms part of the broader infrastructural development agenda championed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, aimed at improving operational efficiency and ensuring that policing facilities meet modern standards.

Speaking during the start of construction, the Head of TOCU, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Rev. Michael Laggah, said the initiative reflects the IGP’s drive to enhance policing infrastructure nationwide. He noted that increasing detention capacity is essential to improving the handling of suspects, particularly those linked to transnational crimes.

CSP Laggah emphasized that the new facilities are designed to provide a more humane and conducive environment for detainees, in line with international best practices for the treatment of persons in custody.

“I am laying the foundation myself, which demonstrates the total commitment of my office to this project,” he said, reaffirming TOCU’s dedication to advancing the IGP’s vision for a more efficient and professional police force.

The project is expected to support the unit’s efforts in combating complex criminal activities, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, cybercrime, and other cross-border offenses, by ensuring that suspects are held in secure and dignified conditions.

The expansion marks another milestone in the ongoing modernization of police infrastructure, reinforcing the Sierra Leone Police’s broader mandate to uphold human rights while strengthening law enforcement capabilities.
