Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Freetown City Council has officially handed over management of the Kingtom (Bomeh) dumpsite to Sierra Forever Green Ltd in a move aimed at strengthening waste management while reducing operational costs for the council. The handover was led by Mayor Yvonne Aki‐Sawyerr OBE.
Describing the development as “a major milestone in the implementation of our Transform Freetown, Transforming Lives agenda,” the Mayor said the partnership marks a new chapter in the city’s waste-management strategy. She explained that the company will oversee the dumpsite while operating a plastics recycling facility on-site.
According to the Mayor, the facility is expected to process 30 tons of plastic daily and create approximately 500 jobs, with many current informal waste pickers to be integrated into a more formalised system offering better protection and improved incomes.
She added that the initiative aligns with the city’s broader commitment to employment creation, noting early estimates that around 500 young people stand to benefit from new job opportunities.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr hailed the handover as a landmark step toward improving environmental management and boosting economic prospects for residents. She also encouraged households to register with the Council’s approved waste-collection service providers.
The ceremony was attended by FCC councillors, including the Sanitation Committee Chairperson, the Deputy Chief Administrator, the Environment and Sanitation Officer, and other key stakeholders.
