Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Presenting the 2026 Finance Act in Parliament, Minister of Finance Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura announced a series of tax adjustments aimed at protecting local industries, boosting government revenue, and promoting the nationwide transition to clean energy.
Minister Bangura disclosed that customs duties on several imported goods including tomato products, pest control items, bottled water, and other selected commodities will be increased. He said the policy is designed to protect and strengthen local manufacturing capacity by reducing dependency on foreign products.
According to the Minister, the revised customs duties are expected to generate an additional NLe 3.2 million in government revenue.
In a major shift towards renewable energy adoption, the Finance Minister also revealed proposals to impose a zero-rate tax on LPG gas, energy-efficient cooking stoves, solar panels, and other home solar systems. He said this measure aims to make clean energy products more accessible and affordable for households across the country.
Minister Bangura emphasized that the move is part of the government’s broader effort to promote universal renewable energy use and clean cooking practices, reducing reliance on firewood and charcoal. He noted that discouraging deforestation and promoting sustainable energy alternatives are central to the country’s environmental and public health priorities.
