Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. ECOWAS Chairperson and Sierra Leonean President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio has held direct talks with the military leadership of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, reinforcing the regional bloc’s position that constitutional order must be restored following last week’s coup.
President Bio said the meeting was guided by the communique issued after the Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, which convened in response to the political crisis that erupted after the arrest of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and the military’s announcement that it had assumed “total control” of the country.
“Pursuant to the communique of the Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, I engaged in a constructive discussion with the military leadership of Guinea-Bissau. As Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, I reaffirmed ECOWAS’s unwavering commitment to restore constitutional order,” Bio said.
The talks come at a tense moment for Guinea-Bissau, where military officers have established a High Military Command to manage national security and public order. The intervention by ECOWAS signals the bloc’s intention to maintain diplomatic engagement while insisting on a rapid return to democratic governance.
ECOWAS has repeatedly stressed its zero-tolerance policy toward unconstitutional changes of government across West Africa. Bio’s visit, described by officials as a key step in ongoing mediation efforts, reflects the organisation’s attempt to stabilise the situation while protecting democratic institutions.
