Money Generated From Waka Fine Buses Questioned

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Honourable Abdul Karim Kamara (AKK) has taken to his official Facebook page to demand transparency over funds generated from the Waka Fine Bus transport initiative, calling on authorities to explain how the revenue has been managed.

His statement has reignited public debate on accountability in the country’s transportation sector.

“Can somebody explain to us what happened to the money generated from the Waka Fine buses? Accountability is an important part of governance,” he wrote.

A total of fifty (50) ‘Waka Fine’ buses were provided to the government of Sierra Leone through a Fifty (50) million-dollar grant from the government of the Peoples Republic of China to help ease transportation constraints in the capital of Freetown.

The Waka Fine Bus project was launched by the government as a modern public transportation solution, introduced to ease urban mobility, reduce transport costs, and provide a safer, structured commuting system for citizens. The buses, deployed mainly in Freetown and selected regional cities, operate on a ticketing model aimed at generating steady revenue to support maintenance, fuel, staff salaries, and long-term sustainability.

It was also provided at a significantly reduced cost, intended to boost the capacity of the Metro Company and enhance service delivery. Ken-Green stated that the Sierra Leone Public Transport Authority (SLPTA), which was established by parliamentary enactment in 2023, now regulates the operations of public transport in Sierra Leone.

Since its launch, the Waka Fine Bus service has proven to be a vital resource for commuters across the country, transporting 21,000 passengers daily and serving more than half a million people every month. Metro Transport Company (SL) Limited, which operates the Waka Fine bus service, made a profit of NLe3.8 million in its first year of operation, according to financial statements presented at its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, October 10, 2025.

Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh revealed that since the start of commercial operation of the ‘Waka Fine’ buses on February 2nd, over one million tickets have been purchased by citizens. He said that, on average, the buses experienced safe journeys of twenty-one thousand (21,000) rides every month since they started operation.

However, years into the initiative, concerns have been mounting over the lack of publicly available financial reports. Hon. AKK questioned why citizens have not been briefed on how much the buses have earned and how the funds have been utilized.
