Ministry of Health Reviews National Supply Plan

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with development partners, last week convened a national validation workshop to review Sierra Leone’s annual quantification forecast for 2026-2030, as well as the 2026 supply plan for family-planning and other life-saving maternal-health commodities.

Held in Freetown, the session brought together District Health Management Teams (DHMTs), civil society representatives, and technical partners including Marie Stopes Sierra Leone, CARE International, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The multi-stakeholder engagement aimed to improve the country’s evidence-based, data-driven approach to forecasting and supply planning.

During the workshop, participants assessed demographic and morbidity trends, service-delivery statistics, national consumption patterns, current stock levels, and pipeline information. Officials say this comprehensive review is essential to ensuring accurate annual forecasts that align with the country’s reproductive-health priorities and the broader national health-sector agenda.

UNFPA highlighted its continued support through the UNFPA Supplies Partnership, revealing that the agency has invested approximately US$18.5 million since 2020. The funding supports the procurement of essential reproductive-health commodities and ongoing efforts to strengthen supply-chain systems, particularly for underserved and hard-to-reach communities.

According to the Ministry of Health, an estimated 650,000 women in Sierra Leone currently use modern contraceptives. This level of uptake is projected in 2025 alone to prevent more than 250,000 unintended pregnancies, avert 110 unsafe abortions, and save 600 mothers’ lives
