Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>Alhaji Alpha Bakarr Sahid Kanu, popularly known as Alpha Kanu, has resigned from the All Peoples Congress (APC) party.<\/p>\n

<\/a>In his immediate letter of resignation, which was sent to the APC headquarters on April 28th, 2023, Alpha Kanu cited \u201cpersistent unpleasant prevailing circumstances surrounding my continued membership of the All Peoples Congress\u201d as the reason for his departure.<\/p>\n

Alpha Kanu\u2019s relationship with the APC has spanned over 60 years, from being a sympathizer of the party since 1962, a supporter since 1967, and an active member since 1991. However, he expressed disappointment with the way the APC\u2019s executive members have treated him, especially after failing to be selected as the party\u2019s nominee for Presidential Candidate for the 2018 Presidential Elections.<\/p>\n

In his letter, Alpha Kanu mentioned that he was the only member of the Executive who was inexplicably removed from his position as National Publicity Secretary after failing to be selected by the party in October 2017.<\/p>\n

He also expressed his frustration with the top hierarchy of the Party, stating that they had always done everything possible to make him feel unwelcome in any deliberations regarding the management of the Party.<\/p>\n

Alpha Kanu has stated that his focus is to help move Sierra Leone forward in the area of political and socio-economic development for the benefit of its people, an aspiration that he believes is unlikely to be fulfilled if he continues his membership of the APC. Therefore, he has resigned his membership of the APC party with immediate effect.<\/p>\n

He served in various capacities in the former President Ernest Bai Koroma led government, including as Minister of Information and Communications from 2007 to 2015, and Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources from 2015 to 2018.<\/p>\n

Kanu recently endorsed the current president, Jukius Maada Bio of the ruling Sierra Leone People\u2019s Party (SLPP). He is expected to be a key figure for the SLPP in the upcoming elections, especially in the Northern part of the country, which is the strong hold of the main opposition, APC.<\/p>\n

LETTER OF IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION FROM APC<\/p>\n

Let me assure you that I find no pleasure in writing you this letter. I have been forced by persistent unpleasant prevailing circumstances surrounding my continued membership of the All Peoples Congress to write this letter.<\/p>\n

I have been a sympathizer of the All Peoples Congress since 1962, a supporter since 1967 and an active member of the Party since 1991. A cumulative period of association with the Party spanning over 60 years.<\/p>\n

In the years during the APC\u2019s tenure in power in the period beginning September 2007 up to my quest for the highest position as the APC Party\u2019s nominee for Presidential Candidate for the 2018 Presidential Elections, my relationship with members of the Executive has been a roller coaster.<\/p>\n

Infact, after failing to be selected by the Party in October 2017 by the then Chairman of the Party, I was the only member of the Executive who was inexplicably removed from my position as National Publicity Secretary. Every other member were selected to retain their Executive positions.<\/p>\n

Until this day, as I write this letter, the top hierarchy of the Party has always done everything possible to make me feel and know that I was not welcomed in any deliberations regarding the management of the Party.<\/p>\n

I have therefore come to the conclusion that while my services to the Party are desirable, my engagement in APC party\u2019s decision-making processes meets with an impenetrable \u2018glass ceiling\u2019 at all times.<\/p>\n

With the age that I have now attained, my focus is to help, in my own little way, to move Sierra Leone forward in the area of political and socio-economic development for the benefit of our people. However this is an aspiration that I am not likely to fulfill if I continue my membership of the APC.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I today resign my membership of the APC party with immediate effect.<\/p>\n
