Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>While a previous probe has uncovered proof of other water sources on Mars, this is the first indication that the barren planet once hosted at least one major river system similar to those on Earth.<\/p>\n

The Perseverance rover has produced the first photographic evidence of a huge, long-dead river on Mars, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced.<\/p>\n

NASA\u2019s probe showed the river \u201cwas deeper and faster-moving than scientists have ever seen evidence for in the past,\u201d the agency declared in a Thursday release.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe river was part of a network of waterways that flowed into Jezero Crater, the area the rover has been exploring since landing more than two years ago,\u201d the group noted.<\/p>\n

Two new photo mosaics which were \u201cstitched together from hundreds of images captured by Perseverance\u2019s Mastcam-Z instrument\u201d revealed \u201ccoarse sediment grains and cobbles\u201d \u2014 evidence, scientists say, of a more powerful river system than the \u201crelatively shallow streams\u201d previously discovered by the Curiosity rover.<\/p>\n

One researcher at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which operates the Perseverance rover, said the clues \u201cindicate a high-energy river that\u2019s truckin\u2019 and carrying a lot of debris.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more powerful the flow of water, the more easily it\u2019s able to move larger pieces of material,\u201d explained the scientist, who added: \u201cIt\u2019s been a delight to look at rocks on another planet and see processes that are so familiar.\u201d<\/p>\n
