Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>The United 4 Salone Secretariat has received a response from the Rt Hon. Andrew Mitchell, the UK\u2019s Minister of Development and Africa, regarding the country\u2019s past General elections.<\/a><\/p>\n

It could be recalled that the United 4 Salone had in a letter to Hon Mitchell, questioned the credibility of the conduct and result of the elections, while also expressing serious concerns about the divisive actions of the opposition, as well as unfortunate statements from some international players.<\/p>\n

Responding on behalf of the British Government, the Rt. Hon. Andrew Mitchell, acknowledged their concerns about the opposition party and violence, maintaining that \u201cviolence and threats have no place in a democracy\u201d.The minister further stated that \u201cit was a credit to the people of Sierra Leone that the elections largely passed peacefully\u201d. He established that the UK government is \u201cencouraging dialogue between the (Sierra Leone) government and opposition\u201d, adding that the U.K. government has \u201curged the opposition to use appropriate channels to raise concerns\u201d. He identified those appropriate channels as \u201cparliament, courts, and the police\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Rt Hon. ended the letter by reiterating that \u201cthe U.K. remains committed to supporting governance and democracy through their partnership with Sierra Leone\u201d.<\/p>\n

As an independent organization that seeks the interest of Sierra Leone and Sierra Leoneans, the United 4 Salone reaffirmed its commitment to peace and unity in Sierra Leone and urged all parties to work together for the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n
