<\/a>The commission expressed grave concern over security breaches involving unidentified assailants attacking strategic locations, including the Wilberforce Barracks\u2019 military armoury, the military headquarters at Cockeril, various police stations, and the Freetown Male and Female Correctional Centers.<\/p>\n

The breach at the Male Correctional Center resulted in inmates escaping their cells and wandering the streets, posing a significant threat to public safety. The HRCSL strongly condemned these actions, emphasizing the severe implications for both state security and the broader human rights landscape.Acknowledging the courage and patriotism displayed by security forces in resisting and thwarting the assailants, the commission urged the government to bring all perpetrators to justice. The HRCSL commended the President\u2019s commitment to due process in investigating and prosecuting those responsible, as articulated in the Presidential Address on November 26, 2023.<\/p>\n

However, the commission reminded the government of its constitutional duty, citing Section 5 (2)(b) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991, which mandates the protection of citizens\u2019 security, peace, and welfare. The HRCSL called on the government to take necessary and legal measures to safeguard innocent citizens and residents, emphasizing proactive steps to prevent such incidents in the future.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the commission urged all citizens and residents to uphold the law and cooperate with security forces. They emphasized the importance of citizens providing assistance to law enforcement agencies in restoring calm and maintaining law and order, as stipulated in Section 13(a) & () of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991.<\/p>\n
