Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>In a groundbreaking development, the long-standing boundary dispute between the Kpetema and Benduma communities in Malegohun Chiefdom, Kenema District, has finally reached a peaceful resolution.<\/b><\/p>\n

On Friday, 18th October 2024, key stakeholders from both communities gathered at the Peyama Town Barry to sign the historic Peyama Peace Accord (PPA), marking the end of a conflict that spanned over six decades.<\/p>\n

The peace agreement, spearheaded by Augustine Foday Ngobie, Deputy Commissioner of Sierra Leone\u2019s Anti-Corruption Commission, was the result of extensive trust-building efforts that commenced on 13th September 2024. The conflict, which has led to significant violence and destruction in recent years, stemmed from unresolved boundary issues despite strong ancestral and family ties between the two communities.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ngobie, described by many as \u201cthe Moses of his people,\u201d played a pivotal role in brokering the peace deal. Drawing on his experience as a former senior police officer, Ngobie was able to earn the trust of both communities and gain the support of local authorities, the Office of National Security (ONS), and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).<\/p>\n

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ngobie emphasized the importance of choosing peace over continued conflict. \u201cWe are not here to determine who is right or wrong,\u201d he said, addressing hundreds of attendees from both communities. \u201cThe cost of not choosing peace far outweighs the price of reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Peyama Peace Accord outlines six key principles: Mutual Respect and Dignity, Non-Violence, Reconciliation and Healing, Commitment to Dialogue, Respect for Cultural Differences, and Shared Prosperity. The agreement also includes an action plan for conflict resolution, community engagement, and monitoring progress.<\/p>\n

A Peace Committee, composed of representatives from both communities and mediators, was immediately established to oversee the implementation of the accord.<\/p>\n

The PPA is seen as a critical step toward ending decades of unrest, with community leaders, religious figures, and local authorities pledging their commitment to uphold peace and resolve remaining issues through dialogue.<\/p>\n
