Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>The Sierra Leone Association of the Blind (SLAB) marked International White Cane Safety Day on Friday, November 1st, 2024, with a special event held at the Kori Chiefdom Paramount Barray, presided over by P.C. Gbappy IV, in Taiama, Kori Chiefdom, Moyamba District.<\/b><\/p>\n

The event, which started at 11:00, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of white canes for individuals with visual impairments.<\/p>\n

During her opening address, Francess Haja Barrie the Moyamba District chairperson of SLAB welcomed all attendees and emphasized the message that disability does not equate to inability. The event featured a demonstration by Thomas Lebbie animator for Moyamba District, who explained the background of the organization and showcased the significance of the white cane for the blind community. Thomas Lebbie also spoke out against discrimination towards individuals with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Lots of other statements were made by several attendees including Paramount Thomas B. Gbappy IV, chief Peter Yambassu, chiefdom speaker, Kori Chiefdom, Kori radio station manager, selected executive members of the organization amongst others.<\/p>\n

The event served as a platform to highlight the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments and to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for all members of society. Participants expressed their support for initiatives that aim to empower and advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities.<\/p>\n

SLAB\u2019s event on International White Cane Safety Day in Taiama was a meaningful gathering that underscored the importance of promoting accessibility and understanding for individuals with visual impairments in the community.<\/p>\n

In attendance were selected stakeholders of Kori Chiefdom, executive and ordinary members of SLAB, Kori radio press<\/p>\n

The meeting was climaxed with a vote of thanks by Zainab Babawo a member of SLAB from Lower Banta chiefdom and a basic refreshment.<\/p>\n
