Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>President Julius Maada Bio on January 24, 2025, inaugurated a $3.75 million expansion of Marampa Mining in Lunsar, Port Loko District. <\/b><\/p>\n

The initiative, which included the launch of a state-of-the-art expansion plant and machinery, marks the largest single import of mining equipment in Sierra Leone\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The project, a cornerstone of the Bio administration\u2019s efforts to foster foreign investment and ensure equitable community benefits, underscores the government\u2019s collaboration with mining companies. This partnership aims to ensure that host communities directly reap financial and developmental rewards from mining operations.<\/p>\n

As part of the initiative, President Bio distributed SLE 83.7 million (approximately $3.7 million) to the residents of Marampa and Maforki Chiefdoms. This funding, designated as a Community Development Fund, fulfills obligations outlined in the corporate mining agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and Marampa Mines Limited.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Bio emphasized the significance of the project. \u201cThis expansion demonstrates our commitment to creating opportunities for our people while attracting critical foreign investment to Sierra Leone. The funds distributed today represent a promise kept to our communities, ensuring that they are not left behind in the nation\u2019s progress,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The newly launched mining plant and machinery are expected to enhance production capacity and position Sierra Leone as a key player in the global mining sector. The investment also highlights Marampa Mines Limited\u2019s commitment to its social responsibilities, directly benefiting local communities through financial and infrastructural development.<\/p>\n

Community leaders in attendance expressed gratitude for the government\u2019s role in ensuring that the mining company honored its commitments. \u201cThis fund will enable us to address pressing local needs, from education to healthcare,\u201d said a representative from Maforki Chiefdom.<\/p>\n

The Bio-led government continues to prioritize the strategic alignment of the mining sector with national development goals, ensuring that foreign investments translate into tangible benefits for all Sierra Leoneans.<\/p>\n
