Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has expressed deep concern over reports of violence and unrest during the ongoing Sierra Leone People\u2019s Party (SLPP) intra-party elections in various regions, including Kono, Kailahun, Bo, Kenema, Koinadugu, Pujehun, Tonkolili, Bombali, Port Loko, and Kambia.<\/p>\n

In a press release dated 17th February 2025, the ICPNC acknowledged the SLPP\u2019s efforts to conduct peaceful elections but highlighted troubling incidents of violence that have marred the process.<\/p>\n

The Commission urged all parties involved\u2014candidates, party members, and supporters\u2014to exercise restraint, avoid actions that could escalate tensions, and prioritize peace.<\/p>\n

Emphasizing its mandate to prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts, the ICPNC called on stakeholders to respect democratic principles and trust the established processes for addressing grievances.<\/p>\n

It commended the SLPP\u2019s initiative to establish Regional Elections Complaints Committees to handle election-related complaints, stressing the importance of transparency, impartiality, and fairness in these proceedings.<\/p>\n

The Commission underscored the significance of dialogue and peaceful dispute resolution, warning that violence undermines both the democratic process and national unity.<\/p>\n

It further urged law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and ensure the safety and security of all citizens, emphasizing that any acts of violence or intimidation must be addressed promptly to prevent further escalation.<\/p>\n

Reiterating its commitment to peace, reconciliation, and national cohesion, the ICPNC called on all Sierra Leoneans to contribute to maintaining the hard-earned peace and stability in the country.<\/p>\n

The Commission highlighted that peace is essential for development and progress, urging everyone to respect the democratic process throughout the SLPP intra-party elections.<\/p>\n
