Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>Sierra Leone has climbed to 57th place globally in the 2025 Global Peace Index and is now ranked 5th in Africa, and 2nd in West Africa. <\/b><\/p>\n

This marks an improvement from 2024, when the country was 66th globally and 8th regionally. In 2023, Sierra Leone was ranked as the 3rd most peaceful nation in Africa. The drop in 2024 was linked to social and political divisions as well as economic challenges.<\/p>\n

According to reports from the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, this progress reflects the ongoing efforts to promote peace and unity across the country. The Commission, together with its partners, continues to work toward building stability.<\/p>\n

The Commission congratulates His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio, on his appointment as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). According to the Commission, President Bio has supported peace initiatives in Sierra Leone and across West Africa. They believe his leadership will help strengthen peacebuilding efforts in the region.<\/p>\n

The Commission also thanks international and local partners, security agencies, political parties, civil society groups, the media, local authorities, community organizations, and the people of Sierra Leone for their efforts in promoting peace.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the Commission remains focused on its goal of making Sierra Leone the most peaceful country in Sub-Saharan Africa and one of the top 10 worldwide. They say that with continued unity and cooperation, this goal can be reached.<\/p>\n

According to the Global Peace Index, Africa\u2019s five most peaceful countries in 2025 are Mauritius, ranked 26th globally; Botswana, 43rd; Namibia, 50th; The Gambia, 55th; and Sierra Leone, 57th.<\/p>\n

The Global Peace Index is published by the Institute for Economics and Peace. It measures peacefulness in 163 countries based on 23 indicators from trusted sources. The index provides data on global peace trends, their impact on the economy, and ways to encourage peaceful societies.<\/p>\n
