Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>Sierra Leone\u2019s U16 basketball team suffered a tough defeat against host nation Rwanda in the FIBA U16 AfroBasket 2025 Championship, with the final score standing at 65\u201347 in favor of the home side.<\/b><\/p>\n

The game, played in Kigali, saw Rwanda\u2019s Hugo Victor Ngabonziza shine as the standout performer, recording 17 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, and 3 assists. His all-around play proved decisive in maintaining Rwanda\u2019s dominance throughout the contest.<\/p>\n

Sierra Leone\u2019s defeat is seen as an improvement to their first match when they suffered a heavy defeat from Ivory Coast losing 112-27. They will play their final group match against Angola on September<\/p>\n

For Sierra Leone, it was a learning experience on the continental stage. Despite moments of resilience, the team struggled to cope with Rwanda\u2019s aggressive defense and fast-paced offense. The 18-point margin highlighted the gap that still exists between the West African side and some of the continent\u2019s stronger basketball programs.<\/p>\n

Sierra Leone is making their maiden appearance in the competition after a convincing defeat against Mauritania at the Zone 2 Qualifiers in Conakry earlier this year. They defeated Mauritania 54-36 in match 1 and 65-46 in match sealing their spot for the African Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.<\/p>\n

The FIBA U16 AfroBasket is Africa\u2019s premier youth basketball tournament, bringing together the best under-16 national teams to compete not only for continental glory but also for qualification spots at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.
