Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>Members of Parliament participating in the Parliamentarians for Climate Finance (PCF) Project on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, engaged the Leadership of Parliament on climate change and climate financing issues at Committee Room One, Parliament Building.<\/b><\/p>\n

The engagement aimed to review the ongoing PCF Project, its activities, progress, and current status in Sierra Leone. The project is implemented by the Climate Parliament in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by the Green Climate Fund.<\/p>\n

Providing background to the initiative, Hon. Mariama Munia Zombo, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Steering Committee on the PCF Project, highlighted the project\u2019s importance to Sierra Leone\u2019s socio-economic development. She noted that the initiative strengthens Parliament\u2019s role in promoting sustainable development through climate financing and green energy interventions.<\/p>\n

In his welcome address, Hon. Yusuf Mackery, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Climate Change, announced that 15 African countries are participating in the project, which aims to expand access to energy through climate financing mechanisms.<\/p>\n

He explained that a Parliamentary Steering Committee was established three years ago to coordinate implementation with relevant institutions. He urged Parliament\u2019s Leadership to fully embrace the initiative as vital to national development.<\/p>\n

Representing the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Aaron Aruna Koroma, Deputy Opposition Leader II, commended the engagement and stressed that green energy is central to national progress. He called for collective mitigating measures to address climate change and advocated for increased financial allocation and support for climate-related interventions.<\/p>\n

Similarly, representing the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina, Deputy Leader of Government Business II, reaffirmed the Government\u2019s commitment to climate change mitigation.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio in advancing climate policies, laws, and regulations, and assured that Parliament would prioritize funding for climate initiatives.<\/p>\n

Climate change experts joined the session virtually and delivered presentations on key aspects of the project. Dr. Sergio Missana, Secretary General of the Climate Parliament, spoke on green energy constituencies, while Wilbourne Showers, Policy Coordinator at the Climate Parliament, provided an update on the PCF Project\u2019s progress in Sierra Leone. Eliza Cocksworth of UNIDO introduced Phase II of the project.<\/p>\n

Aminata Dumbuya, Climate Finance and Energy Advisor at UNIDO, outlined the organization\u2019s support to Parliament in strengthening climate legislation, enhancing budget oversight, developing climate project pipelines, and aligning national efforts with NDC 3.0 targets for economy-wide emission reductions.<\/p>\n

Contributing to the discussions, Hon. Quintin Sallia-Konneh, Chairman of the Lands Committee, called for the sustainability of the project.<\/p>\n

The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, referenced climate-related laws passed by Parliament and the provisions of the Paris Climate Agreement that benefit smaller and vulnerable countries. He raised concerns about bureaucratic barriers in accessing climate finance and emphasized the need to make funds more accessible to developing nations.<\/p>\n

Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, Opposition Whip, also welcomed the initiative, highlighting challenges in climate financing and environmental legislation, while reaffirming Parliament\u2019s role in promoting environmentally responsible laws.<\/p>\n

Other Members of Parliament contributed to the discussions, underscoring collective commitment to addressing climate change through effective legislation, financing, and oversight.<\/p>\n
