Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>The Care Manager of Connaught Hospital, Dr. Mark Kapuwa, has pledged to elevate the facility into a leading centre of excellence not only in Sierra Leone but across the African subregion, citing ongoing reforms and major medical upgrades.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking during a recent engagement at the hospital in Freetown, Dr. Kapuwa highlighted significant improvements in healthcare delivery, including the establishment of what he described as a \u201cstate-of-the-art burns unit,\u201d which has been commissioned by the President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio on Thursday, April 2, 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecently, there has been a lot of reforms, but today, we have the State-of-the-Arts burns unit, which we are set to commission,\u201d Dr. Kapuwa said. He noted that the facility is the first of its kind in the Mano River subregion and will provide specialized treatment for patients suffering from severe burns, including reconstructive procedures for cases where limbs are affected.<\/p>\n

In addition to the burns unit, the hospital has also launched a 128-slice CT scan machine, which Dr. Kapuwa described as among the most advanced globally. He further disclosed that the hospital has acquired 4D ultrasound technology, enabling clearer imaging of unborn babies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have secured 4D ultra sound, we have move a step ahead of 3D, which can be used to visualize a child directly from a woman\u2019s womb; the face of the baby can be clearly seen, and also see his sex,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kapuwa attributed improvements in hygiene and overall service delivery, particularly in the mortuary department, to strong leadership and collaboration between staff and the Ministry of Health. He emphasized that teamwork and dedication have played a crucial role in transforming the hospital environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cleanness of the hospital especially the mortuary department is as a result of good leadership and partnership,\u201d he said, adding that his leadership approach has fostered commitment among staff.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his experience, Dr. Kapuwa said he had previously led reforms at hospitals in Port Loko and Kenema, where he helped improve healthcare systems. He explained that his track record contributed to his appointment at Connaught Hospital, where he intends to continue driving change.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a person who is working steadfastly to improve the status of healthcare facility in this country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kapuwa reaffirmed his vision of making Connaught Hospital a model institution, stressing that the goal is to position it as a benchmark for quality healthcare in Sierra Leone and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are continuing to do to make sure that Connaught is made a centre of excellence, not only in Sierra Leone but in the Subregion,\u201d he said, adding that the hospital should also become \u201cthe most cleanest hospital\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n

The developments mark a key step in ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and service delivery in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n
