Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>President Julius Maada Bio on Tuesday delivered a frank 65th Independence Day address to the nation, acknowledging the deep economic pressures faced by Sierra Leoneans while unveiling a $2.2 billion energy compact and renewed agricultural drive as the cornerstone of national transformation.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the 65th anniversary of the raising of Sierra Leone\u2019s flag, Bio departed from traditional ceremonial sentiment, declaring that \u201ca mature nation does not hide from difficulty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGlobal conflicts, disrupted supply chains, and rising fuel prices continue to increase the cost of food, transport, fertilizer, and other essentials,\u201d the President said. \u201cFamilies feel it in the market. Drivers feel it at the petrol station. Households feel it in their rent and electricity bills. I will not pretend otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bio acknowledged that Sierra Leone remains too dependent on imports, making citizens vulnerable to external shocks. However, he insisted that relief measures\u2014including cash transfers, strategic commodity reserves, and temporary fare support\u2014are not enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe deeper response is to build an economy that produces more of what it consumes,\u201d he said, declaring 2026 a \u201cyear of action and accelerated execution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The centerpiece of the address was the announcement that the government is proceeding with the \u201cMission 300 Energy Compact,\u201d a $2.2 billion investment\u2014the largest in the nation\u2019s history\u2014aimed at significantly expanding electricity access across the country, reducing dependence on volatile fuel markets, and connecting hundreds of thousands of households.<\/p>\n

Bio also pointed to progress in agriculture, stating that rice import bills are easing and that an Agricultural Development Bank will soon unlock financing for farmers. \u201cA nation that cannot feed itself cannot truly call itself free,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In a direct appeal to the country\u2019s youth, the President acknowledged the frustration of unemployment. \u201cThe temptation to believe that your future lies somewhere else is real,\u201d he said. He urged young people to reject drugs and crime, and to demand accountability from their government.<\/p>\n

On democracy, Bio called for political disagreement without suspending public service, welcoming the return of opposition elected officials to their duties. \u201cPolitical disagreement must never suspend public service,\u201d he said, reaffirming his government\u2019s commitment to electoral reforms through the tripartite committee.<\/p>\n

The President closed with a call for national unity, declaring that Sierra Leone\u2019s religious and ethnic diversity is a strength. \u201cLet the answer be that we faced difficulty with maturity, that we chose to hold Sierra Leone together and move it forward,\u201d he said. \u201cChoose Sierra Leone.\u201d<\/p>\n
