The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning has commenced the rigorous enforcement of the National Country Planning Act, 2025 (Act No. 13), aimed at promoting orderly national development, protecting the environment, and ensuring compliance with planning regulations nationwide.<\/p>\n
Minister Turad Senessie stated that all developers, landowners, contractors, and members of the public are required to obtain the necessary planning permissions and approvals before undertaking any form of physical development.<\/p>\n
The Ministry will also work closely with the Sierra Leone Police, other security agencies, and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure full compliance with the provisions of the Act. Individuals found violating the law risk arrest, prosecution, and court proceedings.<\/p>\n
As part of efforts to enhance public understanding of the legislation, the Ministry will launch awareness campaigns through radio, print media, television, and social media platforms to educate citizens on their legal responsibilities.<\/p>\n
Section 87 of the Act prohibits the construction of houses, fences, warehouses, stores, shops, extensions, or any other form of development without obtaining prior planning permits or approved structural plans.<\/p>\n
Any violation of the provision constitutes an offence, with conviction attracting a fine of not less than NLe120,000, imprisonment for a minimum of two years, or both penalties.<\/p>\n
The Ministry has urged citizens to comply with statutory requirements and secure the necessary approvals before commencing development activities.<\/p>\n
According to the Ministry, the enforcement measures are intended to address illegal construction, protect public safety, preserve environmentally sensitive areas, and promote sustainable urban and rural development across Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n
