Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>The first rule of writing about Bitcoin is: don\u2019t write about Bitcoin.<\/p>\n

The story of the world\u2019s best known cryptocurrency is astonishingly fast-moving and its fans will soon line up to tell you you\u2019ve got it all wrong.<\/p>\n

But write about it we must, because the past 24 hours have been catastrophic for the grande dame of cryptocurrency \u2013 even by Bitcoin standards.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to concentrate on Bitcoin here \u2013 but if you\u2019re a crypto follower, you\u2019ll know the whole market is troubled, to put it mildly.<\/p>\n

As I write this, Bitcoin is trading at $21, 974 (\u00a318,000). It\u2019s fallen 25% in the past five days alone, to its What\u2019s happening to Bitcoin?lowest value in 18 months. Its peak of almost $70,000, in November, feels a lifetime ago.<\/p>\n

The charts are all red and they\u2019re going in one direction \u2013 downwards.<\/p>\n

Experts say this is because of the wider global climate. It\u2019s not just in the crypto world things are not looking good.<\/p>\n

Recession looms, inflation is soaring, interest rates are rising and living costs are biting. Stock markets are wobbling too, with the US S&P 500 now in a bear market (down 20% from its recent high).<\/p>\n

As a result, even the big investors are less free with their money. And many ordinary investors \u2013 not rich hedge-fund owners or corporations but people like you and me \u2013 have less to invest in anything, full stop.<\/p>\n

For many, an investment in something as volatile and unpredictable as cryptocurrency feels like a risk too great in these times.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unregulated and unprotected by the financial authorities, so if you\u2019re using your savings to invest in it and it loses value, or you lose access to your crypto wallet, your money has gone.<\/p>\n

Last month saw two much lower-profile but nonetheless significant coins collapse \u2013 and this knocked a lot of confidence in the market overall.<\/p>\n

As a result, people are increasingly deciding to sell up.<\/p>\n

The more people sell, the less Bitcoin is worth, because that\u2019s how it works \u2013 its value is pegged to its desirability. This has a knock-on effect of more people selling because they can see the value going down\u2026 and the cycle continues.<\/p>\n

Unlike other more traditional assets, Bitcoin has no intrinsic value to underpin it \u2013 there\u2019s no bricks and mortar, revenue stream or underlying business, FT markets editor Katie Martin says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe price is only and purely whatever people are prepared to buy it from you for,\u201d she tells me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when it gets scary for people because, if enough people head for the exit, there\u2019s no floor. There\u2019s nothing to stop it trading at $10,000 tomorrow, if enough people give up or are forced to sell.\u201d<\/p>\n

So that\u2019s the already difficult backdrop for Bitcoin \u2013 and then, the past 24 hours saw these developments:<\/p>\n

Binance, the largest global crypto exchange (basically a platform for trading cryptocurrencies), paused all Bitcoin withdrawals for a few hours. It said this was due to a \u201cstuck transaction\u201d \u2013 although, not everybody believed it<\/p>\n

The crypto lender Celsius did the same \u2013 but it cited \u201cextreme market conditions\u201d rather than technical difficulties. And now, the Coinbase exchange has just announced it is laying off 18% of its workforce, blaming, in part, the \u201ccrypto winter\u201d<\/p>\n

Spooked investors started selling off even more Bitcoin<\/p>\n

The first two caused panic. Imagine if you suddenly couldn\u2019t withdraw cash from your bank, or you heard other people couldn\u2019t. You\u2019d be at the nearest cash machine, along with everybody else, in record time, and this in itself would create more upheaval and more panic.<\/p>\n

In a nutshell \u2013 in order to stabilise it, people who still have Bitcoin would need to hold on to it and others would need to start buying it again. This has happened before.<\/p>\n

Crypto fans will tell you now is a great time to buy, because it\u2019s cheap \u2013 and you then have to sit tight and watch it turn the corner. This is how it\u2019s always worked.<\/p>\n

One of them tweeted me earlier: \u201cThe pump will always happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The persuasive stories of those who have \u201cgot rich quick\u201d, and the high-profile celebrity endorsements, do attract new money.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk has tweeted prolifically about his love of crypto \u2013 and his electric-car company Tesla invested $1.5bn in Bitcoin last year.<\/p>\n

But investment advisers urge tremendous caution.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s somewhere only the brave should enter,\u201d State Street Advisors managing director Altaf Kassam told BBC Radio 5 Live\u2019s Wake Up To Money programme.<\/p>\n

And speaking of brave, Hollywood A-lister Matt Damon fronted a crypto ad with the slogan \u201cFortune favours the brave,\u201d in October 2021. It played out at the Super Bowl and has been viewed 28 million times on Twitter and YouTube.<\/p>\n

However the \u201cbrave\u201d who bought Bitcoin when the ad came out probably won\u2019t now be feeling they were done any \u201cfavours\u201d \u2013 it was worth about three times as much then as it is today.<\/p>\n
