Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>Canadian mobile and internet giant Rogers says it will give credits to millions of its customers after a nationwide outage last week.<\/p>\n

In a statement posted late on Tuesday, the firm said users will receive \u201cthe equivalent of five days service\u201d.<\/p>\n

The outage \u2013 which lasted for more than 15 hours \u2013 also affected transport, banking and emergency services.<\/p>\n

Regulators have ordered the company to provide an account of \u201cwhy\u201d and \u201chow\u201d the disruption happened.<\/p>\n

Rogers is one of Canada\u2019s largest telecoms companies with more than 11m subscribers.<\/p>\n

It said in a tweet that it would credit customers with five days worth of service instead of the two days it had previously offered.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s industry minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said\u201dThe national outage of telecom services that millions of Canadians experienced in the last few days is unacceptable. Full stop,\u201d in a tweet on Monday.<\/p>\n

He said he had gathered the leaders of major telecoms companies \u201cto demand they take immediate action to improve the resiliency and reliability of our networks\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, which regulates the sector, said it was seeking \u201ca detailed account from Rogers as to \u2018why\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019 this happened, as well as what measures Rogers is putting in place to prevent future outages\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis widespread network outage not only disrupted Canadians and Canadian businesses across the country, it prevented access to services such as 911 and emergency\/public alerting, as well as other critical infrastructure services,\u201d it added in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The outage began at 04:30 local time (09:30 BST) last Friday and lasted for more than 15 hours. Most services have now been restored.<\/p>\n

Chief executive Tony Staffieri said the outage followed \u201ca maintenance update in our core network\u201d which \u201ccaused some of our routers to malfunction\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some bank machines were offline during the blackout, while many emergency services phone numbers reported difficulties with incoming calls, and hospitals asked on-call staff to come into work until the issue was resolved.<\/p>\n

During the outage people flocked to coffee shops and libraries seeking functioning Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n

Three companies \u2013 Rogers, Bell Canada and Telus Corp \u2013 control 90% of the telecoms market in Canada.<\/p>\n

Critics say the outage demonstrated a need for more competition in the country\u2019s telecoms sector as the nation was so widely incapacitated.<\/p>\n
