Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. <\/strong><\/span>Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX company has been launching thousands of satellites into orbit. Many people say they\u2019ve seen them in the skies.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re part of the Starlink project, which aims to provide high speed internet services from space, to remote areas on Earth.<\/p>\n

What is Starlink and how does it work?<\/b><\/p>\n

Starlink provides internet services via a huge network of satellites.<\/p>\n

It is aimed at people who live in remote areas who cannot get high-speed internet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are people in the UK in that category, but more across the world, in places like Africa,\u201d says Dr Lucinda King, Space Projects Manager at the University of Portsmouth.<\/p>\n

Starlink\u2019s satellites have been put in low-level orbit around the Earth to make connection speeds between the satellites and the ground as fast as possible.<\/p>\n

However, a great many low-level satellites are needed to provide full coverage of the globe.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s thought Starlink has put some 3,000 of them into space since 2018. It may eventually use 10,000 or 12,000, says Chris Hall, editorial director of the technology website Pocket Lint.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing satellites solves the problem of getting internet connections to remote locations in deserts and mountains,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt bypasses the need to build massive amounts of infrastructure, like cables and masts, to reach those areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

How much does Starlink cost and who will use it?<\/b><\/p>\n

Compared to standard internet providers, Starlink isn\u2019t cheap.<\/p>\n

It charges customers $99 per month (\u00a389 per month in the UK). The dish and router needed to connect to the satellites costs $549 (\u00a3529 in the UK).<\/p>\n

However, 96% of households in the UK already have access to high-speed internet, as do 90% of households in the EU and the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the developed world is already well connected,\u201d says Professor Sa\u2019id Mosteshar of London University\u2019s Institute of Space Policy and Law. \u201cThey\u2019re relying on a small share of the market for revenues.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company says it has 400,000 subscribers in the 36 countries it currently covers \u2013 mostly in North America, Europe and Australasia. This is made up of both households and businesses.<\/p>\n

Next year, Starlink plans to extend its coverage further across Africa and South America, and into Asia \u2013 regions of the world where internet coverage is more patchy.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarlink\u2019s prices may be too high for many households in Africa, say,\u201d says Chris Hall. \u201cBut it could play an important role in connecting schools and hospitals in remote areas there.\u201d<\/p>\n

How is Starlink helping in Ukraine?<\/b><\/p>\n

As Russian forces have advanced in Ukraine they have closed down Ukrainian internet services and tried to block social media.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk made Starlink available in Ukraine immediately after the invasion started. About 15,000 of Starlink\u2019s sets of dishes and routers have been shipped to the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarlink has kept things going, like public services and government,\u201d says Chris Hall. \u201cThe Russians haven\u2019t found a way of disabling it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It has also been used on the battlefield.<\/p>\n

\u201cUkrainian forces are using it to communicate \u2013 for example, between headquarters and troops in the field,\u201d says Dr Marina Miron, defence studies researcher at Kings College London.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts signals cannot be jammed like ordinary radio signals can be, and it takes only 15 minutes to set up the kit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is Starlink creating space clutter?<\/b><\/p>\n

In addition to Starlink, rivals such as OneWeb and Viasat \u2013 who also run satellite internet services \u2013 are putting thousands of satellites into low-Earth orbit.<\/p>\n

That will lead to problems, says Sa\u2019id Mosteshar.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes space less and less safe in terms of collisions,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cSatellites could hit other vessels and create fragments of wreckage and these, in turn, could cause a lot more damage when flying at high speeds.\u201d<\/p>\n

There have recently been a number of near misses involving Starlink satellites, including near misses with China\u2019s space station.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there are too many fragments, it could make low-Earth orbit unusable in the future,\u201d says Dr King of Portsmouth University.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we may not be able to get out of low-Earth orbit into higher orbits, where our navigational satellites and telecoms satellites are situated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starlink\u2019s satellites are also creating problems for astronomers.<\/p>\n

At sunrise and sunset, they may be seen by the naked eye because the sun glints off their wings.<\/p>\n

This can cause streaks on telescope images, obscuring the view of stars and planets.<\/p>\n

\u201cAstronomers saw the problems early,\u201d says Professor Mosteshar. \u201cThey were the first to complain.\u201d<\/p>\n
