EFF condemns condition of Mpumalanga roads after 4 members die in fatal crash

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The EFF has urged authorities in Mpumalanga to “pay special attention” to the condition of the province’s roads following a crash that claimed the lives of four of its members.

They died after a bakkie they were travelling in overturned in Kwa-Mhlanga around Vaalbank on Wednesday.

One person survived the crash and was taken to a private hospital in a critical condition.

According to the EFF, the five members were returning home when the crash happened.

“These fighters were on their way home after doing organisational work in preparations for the by-elections scheduled for the 1st of June at the Dr Moroka municipality,” the party said.

The EFF had since condemned the conditions of the roads in Mpumalanga and requested the authorities to intervene.

The EFF said in a statement: “While the circumstances leading to the accident are unclear, we all know the state of the roads in Mpumalanga and would like to urge authorities in that province to pay special attention to fixing the state of the roads in that province.”

EFF regional chairperson of the Nkangala district, Mpho Morokolo, told News24: “The condition of Mpumalanga roads is bad, particularly the area where the accident happened. It is an example of the dilapidated state of the roads the province has.”

Mpumalanga community safety, security, and liaison department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed the crash.

“We received information about an accident where a bakkie overturned with five people inside. To my knowledge, three people died on the scene and the other two sustained serious injuries and were transferred to hospital,” Mmusi said.
