Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 39-year-old Mbombela businessman has appeared in court in connection with R28 million tax fraud.

Sifiso Innocent Mabuza allegedly submitted fraudulent tax returns while he was the director of a company, Shishila Rural Trading.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi said the man handed himself over on Monday and appeared in the Mbombela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

“His appearance followed an investigation in relation to a fraud case which transpired during 2018 and 2021. During that time, Mabuza was the director of Shishila Rural Trading whereby he submitted fraudulent tax returns to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and prejudiced the receiver of revenue of an amount of R28 million,” she said.

The court heard that he owns more than 10 properties in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Durban and Limpopo.

All addresses will have to be verified before Mabuza can apply for bail.

The case was postponed to Friday.
