Africa-Press – South-Africa. Several people were injured when three cars ploughed into spectators during an allegedly illegal drag racing event in Rustenburg in the North West on Sunday afternoon.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, paramedics went to the scene in Zendeling Street at around 17:10, and found that three vehicles had crashed into the spectators. Injured people were lying on the pavement, he said.

Meiring added:

He said the injured people were treated and provided with advanced life support before they were taken to nearby hospitals.

The details of the incident are unknown, but police were on the scene to conduct an investigation.

North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said a case of negligent and reckless driving was opened for investigation.

He added that police were only aware of eight injuries.
