Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for murdering his pregnant girlfriend.

Aldean Wilkinson stabbed Danelle van der Linde, the mother of two of his children, to death in May.

A day after the murder, he handed himself over to the police.

This week, the Northern Cape Division, sitting in Kimberley, sentenced him to 20 years for the crime.

The 31-year-old Wilkinson was denied bail in June because prosecutors were worried he would interfere with witnesses.

Northern Cape National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said:

“During sentencing, the accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

In a separate incident, Mpumalanga police arrested a 30-year-old man who had allegedly killed his 28-year-old wife.

Police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said emergency services were called at 15:00 on Tuesday to Buffelshoek near Acornhoek.

There, he said, they found the woman lying in a pool of blood. She had a stab wound and was certified dead on the scene.

The husband was arrested in Calcutta on the same day and was expected to appear at the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court soon.

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela condemned the incident.

“Domestic violence has engulfed our country, and it is about time we all join hands to get rid of this pandemic once and for all.

“It is heart-breaking when people who were supposed to protect each other end up destroying one another,” she said.
