Court sentences North West child rapist, murderer to two life terms

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A North West man, who raped and killed a seven-year-old girl, was sentenced to two life terms.

In addition, the North West High Court sentenced Calvin Khunwana, 32, to five years for kidnapping and five years for defeating the ends of justice.

Khunwana committed the crimes in July 2020, said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Henry Mamothame.

Mamothame said Khunwana, a resident of Photsaneng village, called the girl into his home while she was playing with friends. They saw the girl trying to escape, but he overpowered her. He also threatened to assault her friends.

He raped and strangled the girl and hid her body in a storeroom.

He said:

Judge President Ronald Hendricks agreed with the State prosecutor that Khunwana abused the trust of the child and that he deserved the maximum sentence.

The provincial Director of Public Prosecutions, Rachel Makhari Sekhaolelo, said: “One life of a child is one too many. Our fight against such offences requires a collaborative approach from all sectors of society to defeat this scourge.”
