Africa-Press – South-Africa. The National Joint Operation and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) held a media briefing on Sunday, saying that it was ready to quell any post-election unrest.
With a number of political parties still aggrieved by the election results, the country’s law enforcement agencies have assured the public that there would not be a repeat of the 2021 July unrest.
The country’s security cluster said that it had learned lessons from the unrest and was prepared should there be any similar flare-ups.
The National Joint Operation and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) held a media briefing on Sunday, saying that it was ready to quell any post-election unrest.The uMkhonto weSizwe party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, is leading a contingent of more than 20 parties that want the election results to be declared null and void.
These parties have alleged wide-ranging irregularities from the Electoral Commission (IEC), which the commission has denied.
Defence Minister Thandi Modise said that they were yet to pick up any solid intelligence of unrest brewing.
“July 2021 there were some issues, we arrived a little bit late as defence. I can assure you that was a good lesson, we are not late these days. We get there on time when we are needed, we are prepared.”
Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele said that one MK leader, Visvin Reddy, had already been arrested on charges of inciting public violence.
He said that police could only act when there was evidence of a potential crime.
