Gauteng govt takes over SANRAL CCTV network on e-toll gantries

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Gauteng provincial government has successfully taken over the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL)’s CCTV network on the e-toll gantries across the province.

Plans for the gantries to remain in place to assist in crime fighting were announced shortly after the scrapping of e-tolls in April.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said in a bid to broaden the CCTV network in combating crime in the province, they have taken over and integrated SANRAL’s CCTV cameras on all the e-toll gantries.

“We have taken over all of their CCTV cameras. They are part of our portfolio of CCTV cameras. There is some technology that is there on speed and tracking lost cars, we have been given access to that. We have also been given access to their command centre, we have permanent law enforcement agents that are in the command centre.”

He said as a result they have been able to clear a backlog of cases.

“We have also resolved majority of old cases now that we have access to that information. The use of those gantries and the use of that investment has assisted us a lot in fighting crime in our province.”
