Unclear when rebuilding of disaster hit Riverlands will begin

Africa-Press – South-Africa. It is still unclear when the rebuilding of people’s homes will begin in Riverlands, a month after disaster hit the town.

Widespread flooding swept through the west coast town when four dams collapsed at a nearby farm on August 8.

At least 200 people were forced to flee their flooded homes and take shelter at a church and at a community centre.

A preliminary report into the cause of the flooding points fingers at the Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Department which owns the farm where the dams are situated.

At least 60 people are still being housed at local centres, while talks between community leaders and Human Settlements officials continue.

Riverlands disaster steering committee member Ralph Burger explains what the hold up is in the rebuilding process.

“The community is just waiting for a written notice to give the go-ahead for the community and for Human Settlements to start erecting new temporary houses by the three landowners, which are HDA, Swartland Municipality, and the Department of Public Works.”

Burger said that they are also waiting for the final report to reveal how the flood victims will be reimbursed.
