Africa-Press – South-Africa. Police in Kwazulu-Natal have been deployed to assist people stranded due to severe weather on the N3 highway between Warden and Howick.

A number of motorists travelling between KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Free State spent the night in the cold on the national route as it was brought to a standstill by heavy snowfall.

Some people ran out of food, while they also have no basic amenities or ablution facilities.

Police in the province said that their members are gearing up to help.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has deployed police teams to assist.

“Police in KwaZulu-Natal have deployed members to provide assistance and warm food to commuters who have been stuck on the N3 between Estcourt and Mooi River from Friday, 20 September 2024 due to heavy snow that fell in the area,” said police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.

Netshiunda said that some of those stuck on the national route are police officers who have already stepped in to help where they can.

“Among the stranded commuters are police officers, who despite being in the same situation as the rest, are providing security services to fellow commuters.”

Various humanitarian teams will also be deployed to assist the police.
