Africa-Press – South-Africa. Tugboats and a helicopter are some of the moves made by Transnet to improve turnaround time at the Port of Cape Town.
The port has been marred by congestion, causing turnaround delays of up to two weeks at times.
However, Transnet said that the new equipment and a new booking system for trucks would help ease the pressure at the port.
Port inefficiency has been blamed for the slow turnaround.
However, Transnet COO Solly Letsoalo said it was now turning the tide.
“We are not only waiting for new equipment but we have also injected some technical skills in the terminals to improve the maintenance of the old equipment we’ve got. So, we should stabilise the performance enough to be able to handle the demand that we have.”
Letsoalo said that other ports across the country would also receive new equipment to help improve the workflow.
