Africa-Press – South-Africa. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss, Shamila Batohi, has emphasised the importance of rebuilding and strengthening public oversight institutions, which were undermined during the state capture era.

Batohi made these remarks at the Public Protector’s conference in Ekurhuleni on Monday, focusing on promoting good governance.

She highlighted that public oversight bodies, including the NPA and Parliament, were infiltrated by unethical and corrupt officials.

Batohi said while the country was still recovering from the aftermath of state capture, there must be a concerted effort to prevent future corruption.

“It wasn’t just government entities which failed in their oversight role. Private sector actors, professionals such as auditors, bankers and lawyers were also either implicated themselves as enablers or failing to conduct due diligence.”
