Africa-Press – South-Africa. Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile has committed to working within the 21-day deadline to get spaza shops registered in the province.
Maile said the process had been simplified to ensure businesses complied and were on the right side of the law.
He briefed the media on Tuesday afternoon following a declaration by the president to have all spaza shops and food handling stores registered within 21 days or face closure.
The move by the president is in response to an increase in food-borne illnesses affecting mostly children.
Maile said the aim of the interventions was to ensure the safety of communities.
“The objective of the interventions are to get hazardous pesticides off the street, to protect children from exposure to these substances and to prevent future outbreaks. To ensure compliance, the president issued a directive that all spaza shops and food-handling facilities must register with their respective municipalities.”
