Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Tshwane metro will be refurbishing several deteriorating buildings in the capital city and turning them into accommodation for municipal employees who travel long distances to get to work.

The initiative is set to address one of many grievances tabled by the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU), who marched to the city’s headquarters on Wednesday.

The union delivered its memorandum of demands to city officials, who informed them that some of their concerns had already been addressed.

Tshwane’s Corporate and Shared Services’ MMC, Kholofelo Morodi, said: “I have met with the union’s leadership. They were very excited when the mayor set up the bad buildings committee because they want to live closer to economic opportunities.

“We have identified a lot of buildings that we are going to turn into accommodation, and I think that it’s not that difficult for us to prioritise municipal workers.”

She highlighted that this move would benefit both the workers and the city.

“What the city wants to do is rejuvenate the city. We want people to live closer to jobs and if we can get our employees living there, paying rates and taxes and water, we will be able to make an income.”
