Africa-Press – South-Africa. Police say if the Madlanga Commission requests the political killings task team’s dockets, they will be provided but it added that investigations have to continue for now.
The original dockets have been sent back to the task team in KwaZulu-Natal.
In July, KZN police head, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, said the dockets had been sitting at the office of now suspended crime detection boss, Shadrack Sibiya.
Police say that sending the dockets back to KZN will not interfere with the commission.
Last week, acting police minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia, raised concerns about the political killings task team dockets being handed back to the unit.
The minister said the dockets would be submitted to the commission to ensure integrity.
However, police say the commission has not indicated if it will require the dockets or not.
Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, said they would comply with the commission.
“In that joint statement, we are saying should the commission require these dockets, we’ve got copies, or any format that they need them, whether they require the originals, the originals will then be taken back and sent to Pretoria, but the national commissioner has assured that copies are safeguarded but the work must continue.”
Mathe added that since the establishment of the task team in 2018, it had recorded a number of successes and said they expected the same with the 121 cases.
